Having not read the previous novels in this world, I thought I was at a disadvantage. I was not sure what the breath was and that the ships were in some wind stream floating.. it was confusing because I had to guess at what levels there were.It may have helped if there was an explanation of the islands and levels
Also, even though it went through who was related and the map of one of the Island groups... a full map of the world would have been helpful
and a Cast of Characters as far as who they are and start out working for ... just a basic list, no need to list Greenstreets associates or agents
So I did like the book very much, it gets stale in the beginning when the intrigue is introduced and then picks up... There are a few parts where the story stalls but not for long.
Captain Kate was a good character, but I expected her to have more tricks. Some times she is very capable and ready and other times, she seems clueless when taking an action.
Now waiting on the next book to come out
If you like political intrigue, and a solid story with some very strong characters and action, pick this up. By the end you will fall for the entire thing

I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely be waiting for the next book in the series. It has a very strong lead female character. The plot lines were interesting and surprising. I have not read the other companion series. You do not need to read it to understand this book. Although, I will now go back and read the other series set in this world while I am waiting for the next book to come out.
*NOT A SPOILER*
Read on with confidence.
Weiss and Krammes handpicked my favorite aspects of my most treasured books and weaved them together into one perfect, delicious book. This is the greatest read I've discovered in the last decade. I love to be critical and point out flaws in a book, but this one was nothing but a good time.
It is almost a steampunk novel, but with core steampunk elements replaced with magic and fantasy (who better to pull that off than the mother of the Dragonlance series?). Ships and technology operate on a magical myst analogous to typical steam and a crude style of magic is used to construct most of society's technology. Magic in this universe is everywhere, but still limited and muted, leaving it as believable as in the Harry Potter universe.
The story contains a complex geo-political terrain akin to Game of Thrones, filled with competing royalties, but not quite so vast that you need to write down names in a separate glossary of your own. The size and number of royal families across the lands are just large enough to paint a more realistic setting, without stretching your memory and giving you a headache. Every character is deep and interesting to boot, making each worth remembering.
From my favorite Sherlock stories, the authors have brought in key deductive characters and problems the readers can try to solve themselves. Factions are entrenched in subterfuge and intrigue and the reader has the opportunity to track minor details, such as names of characters or ships, and unravel mysteries sooner than the book would naturally reveal them; the book rewards readers for paying close attention and noticing when things are out-of-place or interesting events are bound to happen.
I could go on, but I'll say simply that if you, like me, crave a unique fantasy adventure but struggle with having disbelief properly suspended, you should absolutely dive into this book.
There were some minor "cons" not bad enough for me to deduct a star from my 5 star rating
- Typos and misspelled words are frequent. Perhaps editing was rushed? It didn't bother me.
- There is a brief period when the story slows down for maybe 30 or 50 pages. It was hard to believe that a story so good could start to drag a little bit, but it quickly picks the tempo back up and begins putting the complex web of events together beautifully.
Enjoy!
The setting, characters and plot of this book are just what I was looking for but I found the pacing tedious and the order of telling the various threads of the story to be a bit scattered. It’s good enough to try the next book in the series.
Margaret Weis takes the elements of character and setting of a fantasy world and makes the reader part of the world! Great storyline and excellent story!!!
Loved the book from beginning to end. Characters seemed real, and I geunuely cared for them. Would highly recommend it.
I'd say this is a solid book but it's not really about kate. While much of the story revolves around kate the book suffers from multiple point of views that don't really support kate's story but more the nation. Normally I would give this book a solid 5 stars but the description talks about captain Kate and her adventures which the book decidenly does not focus on till the end.
This book was very well done. You don't hear much about the former characters and the other series however it is introduces totally new characters. Very well done. Like I said, not as good as the other one, but very well done and I really enjoyed it. The ending was perfect. I hate cliffhangers but this was really well done
